The hike to the frozen waterfalls is short, but it is a real winter walk: steep and icy on the way down, a climb on the way back, and a long day with about three hours in a vehicle. Operators set their own age limits, and many do not state one. The table starts with the minimum age.

Highlights

  • Pickup within 10 km of the Rovaniemi city centre; 5–6 km of walking in total

  • Korouoma second: about 2.5–3 km to the icefalls the listing calls Brown River and Mammut
  • Small group of at most 8; minimum age 7; snacks cooked on the fire

About this tour

A combination of two waterfall sites on the way east. At Auttiköngäs you walk a short nature trail to the rapid that stays open in winter and climb the observation tower. In Korouoma the guide takes the route the operator calls the safest to two icefalls, named in the listing as Brown River and Mammut, and ends with snacks over the fire. The operator explains walking technique on snow and ice before the start.

What's included

  • Pickup and drop-off within 10 km of the city centre
  • Local guide, small group of at most 8
  • Short hikes at Auttiköngäs and in Korouoma, observation tower

What to bring

  • Thermal underwear, winter coat, warm trousers
  • Hat, gloves, scarf, thick socks
  • Warm boots suitable for hiking

Know before you go

  • The hike is on snow and ice with steep hills.
  • Very bulky snow boots are hard to fit with spikes.

Not suitable for

  • Children under 7
  • People with mobility impairments
  • People with back or heart problems

Pickup, hike length and inclusions as the operator lists them on the booking page.

Minimum ages

BookLapland accepts children from 5, The Treasure of Lapland from 7, Arctic GM and Beyond Arctic from 8. The Riisitunturi combination with Aurora Monkeys starts at 14. The other listings state no age; their operators still describe the trail as moderate to demanding. For a child under 8, ask the operator before booking and say how old the child is.

Cold is the main problem

Children cool down faster than adults, and the day has long still periods: the drive, the stop at the fire, the wait for the group. One parent writes that their 11-year-old was crying with cold because there was no fire until the end of the trail, and that the van was cold too. If a tour lends overalls and boots, ask whether they come in children's sizes; otherwise bring proper snow gear, add a spare pair of gloves and socks, and keep a snack and a warm drink within reach.

The slope and the climb

Children usually enjoy the snow on the way down; some reviewers mention sliding on the steep parts as the fun of the day. Metsähallitus, however, bans sledging on the slope and warns that sliding has made it dangerously smooth, so keep children on their feet and fit them with grips. The walk back up to the parking area is the hard part. Plan for it to take a while with tired legs, and keep some energy, and a chocolate bar, in reserve.

Practical points

  • The toilets at the Saukkovaara parking area are few and overloaded on busy days; use the toilet before leaving Rovaniemi.
  • Smaller groups help: on a tour of at most 8, the guide can wait for a slow walker.
  • Bring a head torch in December, when it gets dark early.
  • Child prices, where a tour has them, appear on the product page when you select the number of children.

Families in the reviews

Families with school-age children write about patient guides. The 2-star review is about a cold child and no fire until the end of the trail.

“Michael was the best guide ever. My kids(10 & 8 years) had a fun and amazing time there and we know it was from the professional and very kids friendly Michael.”

“My 11 year old boy was literally crying because he was freezing and there is no fire place in the middle of the trail. We was expose to fire place only at the end of the trail , what is the use. And the van used for transportation was also very cold.”
Abdul · Malaysia · January 2024 Frozen Waterfall Hiking Tour · ToTheNorth
“Jorge led us on a brilliant tour of the waterfalls. It was quite icy and my mum struggled at the more difficult points but he was always on hand to help. … Only improvement would be that it would’ve been nice to have a couple more sausages/other food item or hot drinks but I do appreciate they need to be carried so difficult on this trip!”

Questions and answers

What is the minimum age for Korouoma tours?

It depends on the tour: 5 on the BookLapland listing, 7 for The Treasure of Lapland, 8 for Arctic GM and Beyond Arctic, and 14 for the Riisitunturi combination. Many listings state no minimum; ask the operator before booking for a young child.

Is the Korouoma hike suitable for children?

For children who walk well and cope with cold, yes. The trail is short but steep and icy, and ends with a climb. Warm clothing, grips and a guide who waits for the group matter more than the distance.

Can children sledge down the slope?

No. Metsähallitus has banned sledging on the slope into the canyon because sliding has made the path dangerously slippery.

Are there child prices?

Where a tour has a child rate, it appears on the product page when you add children to the booking.
