Almost every tour on this page drives from Rovaniemi to the Saukkovaara trailhead, walks down to the frozen waterfalls and back, and stops at a fire. What differs is written in the listings: where the van picks you up, what you get to wear on your feet, how many people walk with one guide and from what age children are accepted. The table puts those details side by side. "Not stated" means the listing does not say, not that the answer is no.

  • The northern lights destination is chosen by weather and aurora forecast.

Pickup, hike length and inclusions as the operator lists them on the booking page.

Pickup in Rovaniemi

Most listings collect you at your hotel or holiday flat, some within a set radius: 7 km for ToTheNorth, 10 km for The Treasure of Lapland, 20 km for Arctic Aurora Experience. Two exceptions matter. Wild about Lapland picks up only at accommodation outside the city centre; guests staying in the centre walk to a meeting point downtown. On the BookLapland listing, the guided small group collects from selected places, while the coach option leaves from the Book Lapland office on Koskikatu with no hotel pickup.

Spikes, overalls and boots

The descent into the canyon is the icy part of the day, and Metsähallitus recommends ice grips in winter. Only some listings name grips: snow grips at ToTheNorth, spikes at Arctic Aurora Experience. Others list warm clothing and boots (Wild about Lapland, Beyond Arctic, BookLapland), overalls with winter shoes and poles (Lapland Outdoor Adventures) or thermal overalls (Arctic GM). Several listings name no equipment at all. Reviewers of Arctic GM mention receiving spikes on the day, and one reviewer of the AMG Travel tour was asked to rent them at the trailhead. If grips are not in the listing, ask the operator before the day or bring a pair; the what-to-wear page explains what to look for.

Group size

Where a maximum is stated, it is usually 8: Arctic GM, Wild about Lapland, Beyond Arctic, Lapland Outdoor Adventures, Aurora Monkeys and The Treasure of Lapland all name it. The northern lights combination with Arctic Aurora Experience allows 12. The coach option of BookLapland is a different kind of day: you travel with a full coach and walk at your own pace. Tours compared by group size are on the small-group page.

Minimum age

The listings that state one set it at 5 (BookLapland), 7 (The Treasure of Lapland), 8 (Arctic GM, Beyond Arctic) and 14 (the Riisitunturi combination with Aurora Monkeys). The rest state no limit; the operators still describe the trail as moderate to demanding. Read the page on children before booking a family day.

Food at the fire

Grilled sausages and a hot drink are the standard. Beyond Arctic and BookLapland (guided option) list a lunch, Authentic Experiences adds Finnish pastries, and the Riisitunturi combination skips the open fire and stops at a café for pancakes. The BookLapland coach option includes no food, so bring a packed lunch and a thermos.

Pickup, pace and equipment in the reviews

The practical details in the table are the ones reviewers bring up: a late pickup, spikes on the day or none, a guide walking ahead of the group.

“i rally enjoyed the Trail. our guide suggestions were rally usefull. really appreciated overall and spikes for boots they gave us. i loved the BBQ at the end”
Chiara · Italy · February 2026 Korouoma Hike & BBQ · Arctic GM
“They wrote to me to be on time at 7:45 so I was there at 7:40. But no one arrived. So I wrote them and no one answered. I was waiting outside and got cold. They were late for 25 minutes and no one told me it.”
Elena · Finland · December 2025 Frozen Waterfalls & Pro Photos · Beyond Arctic
“Pick up was prompt and on time, our guide Mattias was good fun and personable, and it was like going on a walk with a friend. He went at our pace and the BBQ was brilliant, would highly recommend both the company and Mattias as a guide :)”
Daniel · United Kingdom · January 2026 Canyon Winter Hike · Authentic Experiences Rovaniemi
“Beautiful place and bad guiding. … The driving there was speedy and reckless with dangerous overtakings on slippery icy roads. - Upon arrival we were told to rent spike shoes for 5 euros, which was not advertised. … The park itself is free to visit, but beware that oftentimes the paths are icy and slippery.”
Verified traveller · Denmark · December 2025 Canyon and Frozen Waterfalls Tour · AMG Travel
“I liked that it was a small group tour (only 4 of us and the guide). The waterfalls were a bit crowded, because it is a very popular place, but we didn't have to wait too much. Our guide was very helpful and informative.”
Dora · Hungary · February 2026 Canyon & Frozen Waterfalls · Lapland Outdoor Adventures

Questions and answers

Which Korouoma tours include spikes?

Among the listings on this site, ToTheNorth includes snow grips for your shoes and Arctic Aurora Experience includes spikes. Several other tours include winter clothing and boots but do not list grips, and some list no equipment. Check the product page or ask the operator.

Do all tours pick up at my hotel?

Most do, some within a radius of 7 to 20 km. Wild about Lapland picks up only outside the city centre, and the BookLapland coach option leaves from its office on Koskikatu without hotel pickup.

What does "not stated" mean in the table?

It means the listing does not give that detail. It is not the same as "no". If a missing detail matters to you, for example the minimum age, ask the operator before booking.

How long is the day?

Six to seven hours for most tours, of which about three hours are the drive there and back. Combination tours run longer: eight hours with Riisitunturi and ten hours with the evening northern lights tour.
